Pedro Mecê, CNRS researcher at Institut Langevin and leader of the CLARITY Group, has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant (2025) for his project MIRACLE-AD (Multi-modal Imaging for Retinal Analysis at Cellular Levels in Early Alzheimer’s Disease).
The MIRACLE-AD project aims to develop innovative optical imaging technologies to explore the human retina at cellular resolution in vivo, combining full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) with advanced phase-contrast imaging to probe dynamic and functional aspects of retinal neurovascular coupling. Using the retina as a unique window into neural and vascular function, CLARITY Group will seek new functional biomarkers of early Alzheimer’s disease and other vision-related conditions.
This ERC support will enable a five-year research programme carried out at Institut Langevin with clinical collaboration from the Quinze-Vingts Eye Hospital, reinforcing the group’s mission to bridge optical physics and biomedical application.
